EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Marc Collin (Nouvelle Vague): Don‘t lose creativity, surprise the audience

Frech band Nouvelle Vague joins great line up at Rubix festival 2024. Band celebrates 20 years since the release of their seminal first album alongside the launch of their new album "Should I Stay or Should I Go". Therefore we talked with Marc Collin, producer and founder of the Nouvelle Vague.

It‘s been 20 years since release of your self-titled album? In these 20 years the band is still growing, experimenting, searching for new challenge, but not losing its original sound. What is your recipe for successful career?

- I‘m not sure that I have a recipe, but I‘m really trying to change, to follow my instinct, to surprise the audience. So, there was a lot of evolution since the first album that was really kind of a Bossa Nova album, and we went to a lot of different places. And yeah, I think it‘s still, the recipe is trying to still be creative and to try to find the right performance.

Can you tell us more about the band members and their music taste? I assume that you all have different preferences and when you combine all of that – the Nouvelle Vague magic sound is born!

- Well, the band members, it‘s changed a lot through all the years, but I would say that we always try to have people that are very open to a lot of different genres of music. The drummer is more pop, the bass player is more hip-hop, rock and maybe jazz. And I think that the singers are quite different, and for example, Phoebe is more like a soul, blues kind of singer, and Melanie is more like a pop singer, very Frenchy. So that‘s the thing, that everything is quite diverse and changing all the time.

Tell us more about collaboration with Bijou and Marine Quéméré on new “Shout” song and video? Will they maybe join us at Rubix festival?

- At Rubix Festival, Bijou won’t be there, but Marine Quemere will be there with Alyona, who features on quite a few tracks on the new album.

For the ‘Shout’ video we wanted to do something fresh and full of sunshine, but still keeping it very French, we filmed it in the South of France. It gives a new image to the band, which is interesting.

In January you kicked off new Sessions channel with “You Spin Me Round“ video filmed in Brussels. Will you continue to „treat“ the fans with beautiful videos like this?

- Yes, I hope so. We filmed two other tracks during this session ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ and ‘People Are People’. I hope that they will release them on the same channel some time this year.

What do you know about Montenegro?

- I’ve heard a lot about Montenegro! Quite a few of my friends have been before on holidays and highly recommend it. I’m looking forward to my trip.

Can you give us some hint about your performance at Rubix festival?

- It’s our new show, a mix between the first and the new album with two amazing singers!

What is the most beautiful place you’ve ever performed?

- Not easy to say, maybe in Greece, in Amorous island.

Your favourite Nouvelle Vague song?

- ”Let Me Go.”
